Korçë is often called the "Paris of Albania", a refined and cosmopolitan city in southeastern Albania known throughout the country for its culture, its old bazaar, its café society, and its tradition of education. It was home to one of Albania's first schools to teach in the Albanian language, and today it houses the country's finest collection of medieval Orthodox art. Set near the borders with both North Macedonia and Greece, Korçë has absorbed a rich mix of cultural influences.
The most important collection of medieval Orthodox icons and religious art in Albania: over 7,000 objects spanning 14 centuries, including masterpieces by the 16th-century painter Onufri, David Selenicasi, and other Albanian iconographers. The museum is essential for understanding Albania's rich Byzantine and post-Byzantine artistic heritage, and rivals collections in far more famous institutions.
The beautifully restored 19th-century bazaar quarter at the heart of Korçë: a grid of cobblestone streets with traditional arched workshops, craft shops, cafes, and a lively market atmosphere. One of Albania's finest urban heritage restoration projects, the Old Bazaar has been transformed into one of the most pleasant areas in the country for an evening stroll.
Albania's largest Orthodox cathedral, rebuilt in 1992 to replace the original church destroyed by Enver Hoxha's atheist regime in 1968. The interior is decorated with magnificent frescoes in the Byzantine tradition painted by contemporary Albanian artists: a powerful statement of cultural and religious revival after 23 years of state atheism.
The Cemetery of the Martyrs in Korçë is a solemn memorial site honouring the Albanian fighters who died during World War II. Dominated by a striking sculptural monument, the cemetery reflects the strong partisan resistance tradition of the Korçë region, which was one of the most active areas of the Albanian national liberation struggle. The site offers a thoughtful counterpoint to Korçë's rich cultural heritage: a reminder of the sacrifices of the 20th century alongside the layers of medieval and Ottoman history that define the city.
A historic Orthodox church in the Korçë region dedicated to the prophet Elias, set in a serene rural landscape typical of the southeastern Albanian highlands. Like many of the old churches scattered across this part of Albania, it represents the deep continuity of Orthodox Christian practice in a region that was never far from the great Byzantine cultural centres of the medieval world. The church's elevated setting offers fine views across the surrounding countryside.
The historic 16th-century Ottoman mosque at the heart of Korçë's old bazaar, now housing a small museum of Islamic art and artefacts. The interior retains fine carved stucco decoration and original painted woodwork from the Ottoman period: a quiet and interesting counterpoint to the city's better-known Orthodox heritage.
