Dhërmi is one of the most visually stunning and historically rich villages on the Albanian Riviera, a place where Byzantine monasteries perch on limestone hillsides above an impossibly blue Ionian sea. The village is the ancient home of the Drimadiotes, a Greek-speaking Orthodox community whose roots in this coastal landscape stretch back through the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. Recorded in the Ottoman defter of 1583 with fifty households, Dhërmi was once so densely populated with monasteries and churches (more than forty at its peak) that the region was called "little Mount Athos." Most are long gone, making the few that survive extraordinary witnesses to a devotional tradition of staggering depth. The old village climbs the hillside in tiers of stone houses and cobbled lanes above the pebble beach, offering one of the most atmospheric combinations of history and natural beauty anywhere in Albania.

Albanian Riviera Crystal-clear Ionian Water White Pebbles

Dhërmi Beach is widely regarded as one of the finest stretches of coastline in Albania: a long arc of white and grey pebbles set against water of an extraordinary clarity and colour that shifts from pale turquoise in the shallows to deep cobalt further out. The beach lies at the foot of the hillside village, with the old stone houses visible on the terraces above, and the limestone mountains of the Albanian Riviera rising steeply behind. The contrast between the bleached pebbles, the vivid sea, and the dark green of the hillside pine and olive trees gives the beach its characteristic visual drama, a combination that has drawn travellers to this part of the Albanian Riviera since at least the 19th century. The sea floor is clean and the water temperature warm through the summer months. Dhërmi Beach forms the natural base for exploring the village, its monasteries, and the surrounding coast, and is one of the most compelling reasons to include the Albanian Riviera in any itinerary of historic Albania.
